What Is the Gospel?

The word "Gospel" means good news. It is the central message of Christianity — the story of what God has done to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ.

Key Scripture

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

— Romans 5:8

The Problem: Sin

The Gospel begins with an honest diagnosis. The Bible teaches that every human being has sinned — fallen short of God's perfect standard. Sin is not just doing bad things; it is a fundamental orientation away from God, a choosing of our own way over His. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)

The consequence of sin is separation from God — both in this life and eternally. "For the wages of sin is death." (Romans 6:23a) This is not a punishment God delights in. It is the natural result of turning away from the source of all life.

The Solution: Jesus

Here is where the good news begins. God did not leave humanity in its broken state. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take the penalty for our sin upon Himself. Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live, then died the death we deserved. His death on the cross was a substitution — He took our place.

But death could not hold Him. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, defeating sin and death permanently. His resurrection is the proof that His sacrifice was accepted and that new life is available to all who believe.

The Response: Believe and Receive

The Gospel is not just information — it is an invitation. God offers forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life as a free gift. You cannot earn it. You cannot deserve it. You simply receive it by faith.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23) Receiving this gift means acknowledging your need, believing that Jesus died and rose for you, and trusting Him as your Savior and Lord.

A Prayer to Begin

If you want to receive the gift of the Gospel, you can pray something like this — sincerely, in your own words:

"Lord Jesus, I know I have sinned and fallen short. I believe You died for me and rose again. I turn from my old way of living and I trust You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving me and giving me new life. Amen."

If you prayed that sincerely, the Bible says you are now a child of God. The journey ahead is about growing in that new life.

Your journey doesn't end here.
