Steps in Christ

1.4 — Who Is Jesus?

Meet the Twelve Disciples

Jesus selected twelve ordinary men to follow Him, learn from Him, witness His ministry, and carry the gospel to the world. They were fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot — imperfect people transformed by walking with the Son of God.

The Twelve Are Named

Matthew 10:1–4

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

This is the only place in Matthew where all twelve are listed by name. Notice the variety — brothers, rivals, and a future traitor — all called by the same Jesus.

What We Can Learn From the Disciples

The Twelve were not chosen because they were extraordinary. They were fishermen, tax collectors, political radicals, and doubters. Jesus did not call the qualified — He qualified the called. What made them remarkable was not who they were, but who they followed.

Their failures are recorded honestly in Scripture — Peter's denial, Thomas's doubt, the disciples' arguments about greatness, their abandonment of Jesus in the garden. These are not edited out. They are preserved so that ordinary, struggling people in every generation can see themselves in the Twelve and find hope.

After the resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, these same men turned the world upside down. The transformation was not their own doing — it was the work of God in people who were willing to follow. That same invitation stands today.

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

— 1 Corinthians 1:27

Other Important Apostles

The New Testament also records other men who were recognized as apostles — most notably Matthias, who replaced Judas, and Paul, whose dramatic conversion and missionary journeys shaped the early church.
