How Do I Pray?
Prayer is simply talking with God. It is the most direct line of communication you have with your Creator — and it is available to you at any moment.
Key Scripture
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
— Philippians 4:6
What Is Prayer?
Prayer is not a ritual or a formula. It is a conversation — honest, personal, and direct — between you and God. You do not need special words, a particular posture, or a quiet room (though those can help). You can pray anywhere, at any time, about anything.
The Bible encourages us to pray constantly: "Pray continually." (1 Thessalonians 5:17) This does not mean you must be on your knees all day. It means cultivating an ongoing awareness of God's presence and a habit of turning to Him throughout your day.
What If I Don't Know What to Say?
That is completely normal. The Bible promises that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness: "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." (Romans 8:26) You can simply sit quietly before God and let Him know you are there.
Start small. Even a one-sentence prayer — "God, I need You today" — is a genuine act of faith. Prayer grows as your relationship with God grows. The more you pray, the more natural it becomes.
The Lord's Prayer: A Model for Prayer
When Jesus' disciples asked Him how to pray, He gave them a model — what we call the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13). It is not meant to be recited mechanically, but to teach us the shape of prayer: worship, surrender, petition, confession, and protection.
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name"
Begin by acknowledging who God is — your Father, holy and worthy of reverence.
"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"
Surrender your agenda to His. Pray for His purposes, not just your own.
"Give us today our daily bread"
Bring your practical needs to Him. He cares about the details of your life.
"And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors"
Confess your sins and extend forgiveness to others — both are essential.
"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one"
Ask for protection and strength to resist what pulls you away from God.
A Simple Daily Prayer Framework
Many new believers find it helpful to use the acronym ACTS as a guide for daily prayer:
Adoration
Begin by praising God for who He is — His love, power, faithfulness, and goodness.
Confession
Honestly acknowledge your sins and shortcomings. Ask for forgiveness.
Thanksgiving
Thank God for specific blessings in your life — big and small.
Supplication
Bring your requests to God — for yourself, for others, for the world.
